Opa Dekker in Canada

Herman de Jong

~ Sunday Afternoon

Maaike had only invited no church people for coffee after the morning service. After all, they already had visitors. On top of that, none of their friends smoked anymore, and they certainly wouldn’t have appreciated Opa’s eternal pipe. If only they could have sat outside. But by now it had become bloody hot again and even in the shade of the house it was unbearable. She herself liked the aroma of Opa’s tobacco. But Jolanda was constantly wiggling her nose and sat as far away from Opa as possible. Sarah loved the smoke, and the boys?  Well, Maaike suspected they had already started their smoking careers, although she had no proof of that.
