In my class there were three students who planned to go to high school so the principal gave them extra lessons to help them prepare for this. I was interested in this too and when I mentioned it once at home, my dad was strongly in favour of that. He knew that it was impossible that all the children could become farmers and since I was not so strong he thought it was a splendid idea that I learned another occupation, so I also was given extra lessons.
In September I started at the Mulo in Schoonhoven. It was quite a lot of travel though. Every day I first had to walk to the station in Stolwijk and then take a train to Schoonhoven which took about 40 minutes and then I had to walk another 10 minutes to the school. Very soon I regretted this step. I was good at quite a few subjects such as math, history, geography, algebra, etc., but we had to learn 3 foreign languages, English, French and German and I was never good at languages.
The first year went fairly well but the second year my marks for languages were not very good. The school had been closed in the winter for a couple of months….. and the rest of this story is missing. Using dates given earlier it is likely that Cor was in the Mulo from the years 1941-1945 or 1946.
