Mina Brouwer is my wife’s grandmother. She was a force of nature, with a sharp tongue and a good heart. I only knew this Oma for five years, but there is much more to be known about her from many descendants and from the Brouwer Book on this website.

Among the heirlooms that Oma passed down to us is a collection of Dutch sayings she had written down over the years, as she thought of them. These were typed out later by someone in the family, and a copy ended up in my father-in-law’s estate. (It is missing a page that some Brouwer is sure to have.)

There is a long history of spreuken (proverbs), spreekwoorden (sayings), and gezegden (idioms) in the Netherlands, going back a thousand years. But proverbs and sayings are a feature of many languages, and a thorough study would reveal that even though proverbial wisdom does differ from culture to culture, many idioms are shared. Human nature being what it is, “the apple does not fall far from the tree.”

So it is worth exploring, one by one, how each of these idioms is rooted (Dutch, rural, city, religious, etc.) and whether there is a workable English equivalent. These oral traditions don’t quite make the cut as wisdom literature, but I think they have served common culture well.

      Thanks Ingeborg. I have added your suggestion to the bottom of the list. As with many sayings, it will not be obvious to many what the meaning is. Without research I’d guess that it’s probably something like “the true intention is finally revealed”, but what that has to do with monkeys, mag ik joost weten. I’d be curious to know how many of Oma’s sayings are still familiar to a modern Dutch speaker like you. And how many more out there are not on her list. The Uitdrukkingen en spreekwoorden website list is long, but not all in this category.
