Hendrik de Jong (1896 – 1982)

Off the Island

I used to be a member of the singing society “Sursum Corda”. Now, in 1972, this society still exists. My brothers Jacob and Tjebbe, and sister Griet were also members. We met in “Ons Huis”. And how we could sing there. There was also a Jan de Jong, no relative of ours, who had a beautiful tenor voice. I can still hear him, when he had to sing a few lines alone, namely “To praise Jesus my Saviour, that is my calling as a pilgrim on earth” and then we all sang the refrain together again.
