This time next week, I'll be in New York City with my wife Wendy, beginning a weeklong whirlwind tour of the Big Apple -- formerly known as New Amsterdam. We'll be visiting many of the usual tourist sites of course, but we'll also stay aware of roots that we share with New York -- the Dutch Golden Age (1588–1672) that gave rise to Manhattan's preeminence among new world cities.

This week's musings are based on a book by Russell Shorto: The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America. It's a book well worth reading and it made quite an impact on New Yorkers when it came out twenty years ago. Our trip will include a walking tour on Tuesday: New Amsterdam: Dutch Roots of New York.

For those of you who are Facebook friends, we plan on posting daily updates about our experiences. We will have a special emphasis on modes of transportation, since we are doing this the un-North American way -- completely without a car. Facebook friend requests will be accepted. And if you don't see us in your feed just visit Henry or Wendy's page.
