My father always had a bit of the preacher in him. Faith was never far from the surface in his writing. He did prefer less ostentatious stories to sermons, perhaps because he thought himself way below the status of educated preacher, but more likely because he loved to entertain.

So, this 'meditation' is unusual. You have to imagine it appearing in the Dutch pages of CC in 1987 for an audience that could no longer count on Dutch sermons to keep them going.
|
Of course there is story buried within the meditation, some of it timeless and some tied to specific events of 38 years ago. Most notable, in today's context, is the conflict (then over women in office) that scarred the CRC deeply. But there are references to world events too, and you have to wonder what Herman would be thinking today, with all that's going on in the world and in the CRC.

I think, whether the world's for better or for worse, the preacher would still be saying "Lord, have mercy." hdj
