This short story, set on Herman's dearly beloved island of Terschelling, follows one man on his walk along the dyke and on his journey from faith to doubt.
|
The man's name is Cupido, a common name on Terschelling, also amongst Herman's relatives and ancestors. I had coffee with Piet Cupido and his wife Martie in 2023. And we all knew Matt Cupido, the artist (a distant relative), well enough. So the story cuts to the bone with Herman. You can sense his thinking "this could have been me." And his appreciation for Shalem, the counselling service that he promoted from 1983 - 1986.

The story (translated from Dutch) begins -- "He is alone. The dyke is still wrapped in morning mist and the sheep that keep looming up are standing motionless, except for one pleading lamb, mewling softly . . "

Memoirs Wanted
celebrating CC's 80th anniversary. Christian Courier / Calvinist Contact was my father's primary medium for many years, and has been publishing bits of my own work since 1977. Of special note is Saturday's panel discussion: “Unlocking the Kist (Trunk)” on Dutch immigration memoirs, three of which have already been brought to light on this website:

I remain open to hosting other memoirs on Middledom. If you know of any whose memoirs are gathering dust, please point them towards Middledom (perhaps forward this email).
