Herman and Stiny de Jong have visited New York City. A son and daughter-in-law have lived there. And one of their nieces still lives there. So it's not surprising that there's a story in it, somehow. This one juxtaposes big city life with more provincial types -- specifically those from the province of Groningen where the family is rooted.
|
The story does rely somewhat on being told in the Gronings dialect for its effect -- that makes the juxtaposition all the more stark. So you'll have to add that sense to it when you read the translation -- or go back to the original.

Excerpt: I took shelter in the entrance of a big theater where “Dolly” was playing. Suddenly, another couple hurried in. They too had no umbrella — probably foreigners like me, because New Yorkers are ever ready for bad days and always carry an umbrella.
